Is Your Child Ready for Piano Lessons?

Many parents choose to enroll their children in piano lessons, especially if their children express interest in the lessons. However, piano instruction certainly isn't cheap, and it involves lots of consistent practice. Pushing a child to learn piano when they're not ready can be a waste of time and money for everyone. So how do you know if piano instruction is right for your child? There are various ways for a parent to decide.

The first thing you should do, of course, is ask your child how they feel about the matter. If you have a piano at your home, it will be easy to tell if your child is interested in it. It's not uncommon for a young toddler to enjoy banging on the keys! Often, children with pianos in the home express interest in learning how to play much earlier than children who do not have a piano in their home. If you're reasonably sure that your child will be taking lessons at some point, it's probably a good idea to go ahead and invest in a piano. These days, there are affordable, portable digital keyboards as well as the traditional standard acoustic pianos, making it easy for everyone to own a piano.

The age your child should be before beginning lessons really depends on the personality, aptitude and interest of your child. Some people start their children out on the piano as early as three and a half years of age, while others wait much longer. You really will need to discuss the matter with your child over a period of time. Children are notorious for their short attention spans and changing interests, so take some time and make sure they're really interested in learning piano and it's not just a passing whim.

If your child seems to truly want to take piano lessons, explain to them what they can expect and what will be expected of them. Make sure they understand that they will need to pay close attention to their instructor and practice every day. It's important to keep practice sessions fairly short -- 20 to 30 minutes is more than enough for a young child just starting out. Explain to them that lessons cost money and are a privilege that not everyone gets to enjoy. Learning piano is one of the most enriching activities a person can do, and something that your child can enjoy for a lifetime!
